FRIDA

When the vivid and unyielding life of Frida Kahlo comes alive on stage through the choreography of the acclaimed Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Frida is not merely a biographical ballet – it is a poetic and visually stunning portrait of an artist who transformed physical pain and inner turmoil into a bold and radical form of self-expression. Drawing inspiration from Kahlo’s iconic imagery, intimate relationships, and fierce inner world, the ballet captures the many dualities that defined her – strength and vulnerability, joy and suffering, tradition and rebellion. Lopez Ochoa’s choreography is richly expressive, weaving classical ballet technique with folkloric movement and contemporary dance, creating a layered and unpredictable physical language – as complex and captivating as Frida herself. Peter Salem’s original score mirrors Frida’s emotional landscape with a lyrical and at times raw musical idiom, enriched by the colours of Mexican folk traditions and contemporary sonic textures. Every element of the production evokes the visual poetry of her paintings, culminating in a profound and immersive theatrical experience. Frida is thus not only a tribute to an extraordinary artist – it is a dance meditation and reflection on resilience, identity, and the unique power of art to turn pain into beauty.
