Catarina de Meneses

Catarina de Meneses completed her ballet training in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. Her desire to further perfect her craft brought her to the Dutch National Ballet Academy HBO in Amsterdam, where she was noticed by the director of the Maribor Ballet, Edward Clug. She joined the Maribor Ballet Ensemble in the 2008/2009 season and quickly shone as Clara in the ballet The Nutcracker, and also appeared in contemporary dance performances such as Wozzeck by Croatian choreographer Staša Zurovac, as well as Clug’s own works Prêt-à-porter and Watching Others. Among Catarina’s early performances in classical ballet were her graceful brilliance in La Bayadère and the title role in Giselle. Her artistic achievements in both classical ballet and contemporary dance repertoire have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the first prize at the international Danceart competition in 2006, as well as participation in the 22nd International Ballet Competition in Varna. In 2009 and 2011, she was awarded the Lydie Wisiak Prize for her important artistic achievements in the field of ballet. Her dance performances include leading roles in the comic ballet La fille mal gardée, Sergei Prokofiev’s neoclassical ballet Romeo and Juliet, the comic ballet Don Quixote (Kitri), and most recently, the role of Madame de Tourvel in the neo-baroque dramatic ballet Les Liaisons Dangereuses (choreographed by Valentina Turcu and Leo Mujić). In two seasons, she has brilliantly recreated demanding roles in ballet productions at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, including the title role in the ballet Anna Karenina (choreographed by Leo Mujić after Tolstoy’s eponymous novel), as well as Tinkerbell (Peter Pan), Odette (Swan Lake in Vladimir Malakhov’s choreography), and most recently as Sister Angelika Glembay (The Glembays).
