Martin Sušnik


Slovenian tenor Martin Sušnik was born in Australia but has lived in Slovenia since childhood. He completed his studies of solo singing with honours (summa cum laude) at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana in the class of Prof. Pija Brodnik. For his achievements during his studies he received the Prešeren Student Prize and a ceremonial certificate for outstanding academic achievements from the University of Ljubljana. He has participated with great success in various competitions in Slovenia and abroad, where he has won several gold prizes, most recently the first prize at the 2017 International Competition of Opera Singers “Giovanni Martinelli & Aureliano Pertile” in Montagnana, Italy. He has appeared in concerts both at home and abroad, with various choirs, chamber ensembles and orchestras. As a versatile singer he usually sings the leading tenor roles in operas, but also tenor parts of oratorios, masses and art songs (Lied). He has appeared on numerous European concert stages, including the Royal Opera in Versailles, Opéra Comique in Paris, Opera HNK Zagreb, SNT Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, etc. As a member of the Opera Ensemble of the Slovene National Opera Maribor he has portrayed many roles with great success, such as Romualdo (The Black Masks), Camille de Rosillon (The Merry Widow), Nemorino (Love Potion), Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) Lenski (Eugene Onegin), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Lindoro (L’italiana in Algeri), Count Almaviva (The Barber of Seville), Prince Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Knight de la Force (Dialogues des carmélites), Nick (La Fanciulla del West), Pong (Turandot), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), Loge (Das Rheingold), Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail). His most recent stage creations include the title role of Gounod’s Faust, Gabriel von Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra), Matthias (Marpurgs), Don José (Carmen), etc. In 2021, he was awarded the Glazer Charter for outstanding achievements in the field of opera.
