Lucia di Lammermoor

Tragic opera (dramma tragico) in three acts

Librettist Salvadore Cammarano

One of the most famous operas, which still allows for numerous provocative interpretations and innovative stagings today, was composed by Gaetano Donizetti. Known for his significant contributions to the late Italian bel canto tradition, Donizetti adapted the legend of the bride from the remote Scottish village of Lammermoor, which was immortalised in Walter Scott’s novel, supposedly based on true events. The libretto by Salvadore Cammarano focuses on the tragic fate of the young Lucia Ashton, who is forced by unfavourable economic circumstances to marry someone else and thus give up all hope of her impossible love for Edgardo Ravenswood, who is also in sharp personal conflict with her brother Enrico Ashton. The role of the protagonist requires not only vocal virtuosity, but also a deep psychological portrayal that captivates audiences around the world. Donizetti’s iconic opera about a fragile woman driven mad by unrequited love is one of the most famous portrayals of romantic longing.
