Übercountry
A folk-pop punk comedy inspired by the Slovenian musical tradition
Übercountry is the world premiere of a new Slovenian comedy conceived by the directing-dramaturgical duo Nina Ramšak Marković and Milan Ramšak Marković, drawing on Slovenian folk-pop music as the sonic backdrop of several generations. Übercountry creates an imaginary space that conjures up an idealised landscape, only to set it against contemporary social reality. It forms a meeting point between the mythology of folk-pop culture and everyday life, between the rural and the urban, humour and melancholy. Through the story of a group of young people from the social margins, the production creates a space in which folk-pop music becomes a point of departure for reflecting on identity and social (in)visibility. Without irony or condescension, the authors place at the centre a generation searching for a place of its own between tradition and the present.
The project emerges from the paradox between the immense popularity of Slovenia’s distinctive folk-pop music and its near-total absence from, or stereotyping within, theatre and film, where it is often portrayed through mockery or ideological distance. Following in the tradition of 1990s British cinema and the Yugoslav Black Wave, Übercountry explores the poetics of everyday life and the humour, vulnerability, and complexity of life at the margins. Through comic situations and musical material, Nina Ramšak Marković and Milan Ramšak Marković construct a layered narrative in which music functions as the engine of the story and as the carrier of emotional states ranging from euphoria to repressed trauma.
