A MASKED BALL (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA)

Music: Giuseppe Verdi
Libretto: Antonio Somma
Based on Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué by Eugène Scribe

After almost four decades, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) returns to the operatic stage in Maribor, unfolding a timeless story of forbidden love, political intrigue, and the tragic force of fate. Inspired by a real historical event – the assassination of the Swedish King Gustav III during a masked ball – the opera masterfully explores the tension between duty and personal desire. At the heart of the musical drama lies a love triangle between the charismatic Swedish king Gustav, torn between passion and responsibility; Amelia, the woman he loves but cannot possess; and Count Anckarström, Gustav’s loyal friend and Amelia’s husband. As jealousy takes hold and loyalty is put to the test, the path to tragedy becomes virtually inevitable, even as its culmination is veiled by the splendour of courtly ritual. Verdi’s music in this opera – one in which he was experimenting with new expressive possibilities – stands as a model of dramatic precision and emotional depth. Lavish arias, densely woven ensembles, and vivid orchestration capture every nuance of the unfolding tragedy. Although the operatic narrative is set at the very end of the eighteenth century, A Masked Ball continues to resonate powerfully today, exposing the fragility of trust, the cost of personal sacrifice, and the eternal interplay between appearance and truth.
