MEDEA

A co-production of the SNT Drama Maribor, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, and the Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin

At the heart of this tense dramatic structure lies Medea – a woman, wife, and mother who is psychologically and emotionally broken. In a mythic labyrinth reframed within contemporary reality, she traverses a spectrum of intense emotional states: from passionate love to betrayal, rage, jealousy, and ultimately, brutal revenge. Simon Stone’s modern Medea – inspired by the real-life case of an American doctor attempting to reclaim her life after a psychological breakdown, only to find that the world she knew no longer exists – is interwoven with Heiner Müller’s brutally poetic cry of personal collapse. Martin Kušej, one of Europe’s most compelling directors, brings his distinctive theatrical language and powerful visual storytelling to explore themes of exclusion, marginalization, and the demonization of women – particularly those who transgress societal norms. This co-production with the Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin will have its central premiere at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, whose 2025 edition will focus on women – examining the position of the contemporary woman in artistic, philosophical, social, political, and aesthetic contexts.
