An Actor-Authored Project within Cabaret at the White Rabbit
With their original project Lav iz in di er (Love Is in the Air) – a mosaic of intimate autofictional confessions about love – actors Matevž Biber, Nejc Ropret, and Matija Stipanič mark their theatrical coming of age. On the eighteenth anniversary of their shared journey at the Maribor Drama, they choose to look at life (and love) with the distance, tenderness, humor, and self-irony reserved for those wise enough not to take themselves too seriously.
Playwright and dramaturg Maja Borin has shaped the performers’ autobiographical writings – crafted by Matevž, Matija, and Nejc in the form of monologues and verse – into an autofictional performance text composed of fourteen scenes.
Curious what three men in their forties have to say about that “worn-out” yet ever-fascinating subject of love? Lav iz in di er is a sparkling, bittersweet satire on human nature – teeming with witty self-exposure, comic embarrassments, and recollections of amorous misadventures, alongside banal yet poignant fragments of everyday life. It journeys through childhood and dreams, illusions and awakenings, first passions, music, triumphs and heartbreaks, marriages, separations, disappointments, relocations, losses, and even the companionship of dogs, cats, snails, and children.
While cabaret has traditionally served as a space of social satire, Lav iz in di er deliberately turns inward, exchanging political commentary for the exploration of personal topographies. Within this intimate landscape, the trio asks: How does one view one’s own life through the lens of a dramatic character? What happens when two “rabbits” hop into your story and toss you out of your comfort zone? How does a friend come to your rescue and selflessly shoulder your romantic troubles? How do you share your private memories with strangers – and find the right tone in doing so? How much of yourself can you give away before you lose what remains? And who, ultimately, do you become when you step onto the stage of your own “quasi” autobiographical tale?
