Marin Turcu


Marin Turcu is an exceptional artist, an outstanding ballet pedagogue, and an enthusiastic advocate of Romanian folklore. He has had a rich and diverse creative journey. Turcu was born in a village near Cluj, where he grew up amidst the rich folk traditions that he continues to preserve and pass on to younger generations to this day. He was the lead dancer of the ballet ensemble in Cluj for seven years. In 1972, when the Romanian State Ballet performed at the Ljubljana Festival, he caught the eye of representatives from the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. He received an offer and stayed in Zagreb for 15 years.

Turcu quickly became a highly regarded ballet dancer, setting new standards for classical ballet and creating unforgettable roles, including the legendary Rothbart in Swan Lake, Basil in Don Quixote, the Devil in The Devil in the Village, Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, and Franz in Coppélia. He received numerous awards for his performances. In 1987, he joined the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor. Together with his wife Maja Srbljenović, he founded a dance studio within the Maribor theatre. The studio reached its peak with the premiere of the ballet Dance of the Cadets in 1994.
