The Slovene baritone Jaki Jurgec has performed in more than sixty different operatic roles; moreover, he is a regular guest of various opera, festival and concert stages across Slovenia, as well as abroad. He has also made several successful attempts as a stage director. After his graduate studies of singing at the Academy of music in Ljubljana, he perfected his technique and graduated in 2002 under Carlo Bergonzi at the Academy Verdiana, one of the most prestigious Italian institutions for singing. He also received a scholarship of the Slovene Richard Wagner Society in Ljubljana, which enabled his to continue his studies in Bayreuth. Already as a student, he made several promising debuts in both Slovenian opera houses, i.e. Opera Maribor and Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana. He regularly performed at many concerts events, mostly in Italy (Parma, Busseto, Oderzo, Pordenone, Ancona, Padova, etc.). He made several successful debuts in Orff’s cantata Carmina Burana (Italy, France, and Malta), and was a guest soloist in Portugal, Ukraine, Taiwan, Austria, France, Croatia, Montenegro, etc. His most notable operatic roles are Ezio (Attila), Figaro (The Barber of Seville), Silvio (I Pagliacci), Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Dr. Falke/Frank (Die Fledermaus), Baron Dauphol/Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Albert (Werther), Mercutio (Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet), Fra Melitone (La forza del destino), Shaunard and Marcello (La bohème), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Dapertutto/Lindorf/Coppélius/Doctor Miracle (Les contes d’Hoffmann), Count Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Taddeo (L’italiana in Algeri), Thierry (Dialogues des carmélites), Amonasro (Aida) and Papageno (Die Zauberflöte). As a stage director, he directed several gala concerts in Slovenia and abroad; he was also assistant to stage director of Verdi’s Rigoletto. He also staged Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro for Play Opera in Tokio. In Slovenia, he directed the opera performance La bella Opera, and children’s opera Whoever Hopes, Never Gives Up (Kdor upa, ne odneha) by a contemporary Slovene composer Vitja Avsec. For his artistic work, Jaki received many international awards.
