A co-production with Teatro Comunale Verdi, Padova
Originally written in German under the name Die Lustige Witwe, Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow almost immediately gained popularity among domestic (German) public after its premiere performance at the Theater an der Wien in 1905. However, its international praise and reputation across Europe and in America was established soon after the libretto was translated into English and other languages. Taking place in fin-de-siècle Paris, the operetta peeks into an effervescent
world filled with waltzes, folk tales, sentimentality and naughty fun. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story – concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen’s attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband – on the 1861 comedy play L’attaché d’ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac. The most characteristic musical pieces of operetta (Vilja Song, Da geh’ ich zu Maxim, and the Merry Widow
Waltz) are, indeed, the most remarkable examples of concise and well-thought, though complex and pastiche-like dramaturgy. A new promising production of Maribor Opera will be led by the internationally renowned stage director Hugo de Ana.
