Johann Strauss jr.
Die Fledermaus
Die Fledermaus
Disregarding the obstacles to the classification of the oper(ett)a Die Fledermaus (The Bat), written by Johann Strauss jr., which is hard to put in rigid "frames” of musical genres due to the discrepancy between the significance of the drama and the so-called trivial character of the well-orchestrated musical score, it is important to emphasize the quality of this operetta, which is closely linked with the Slovene National Theatre in Maribor. A great challenge in the performance lies within the complexity of the plot and acting, which demands prominent characterization (such as the jailer Frosch). The Slovenian director Vito Taufer will provide a new and fresh perspective on the play that was conceived by the experienced librettists of Offenbach’s operettas, Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, which brings us back to the question of the oper(ett)a’s proper evaluation and its significance for society today. An extensive usage of sparkling and socially engaged humour gives the play its prevalent character that is well accepted and approved by audiences, therefore the choice of Strauss’s Fledermaus anticipates a vivid and festive moment for the following season, especially at the end of the year.
