Mihail Bulgakov
The Master and Margarita
Мастер и Маргарита
Director: Janusz Kica
A fantasy drama will be staged in the director’s adaptation of Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita (1940). In many substantive layers (love, politics, philosophy) it will reveal the Faustian conflict between politics and art in the history of mankind.
Berlioz, the editor of an art magazine, who is disclosing an atheist thesis on the invented myth built around Jesus Christ in a chat with his friend the poet Bezdomny, is opposed by Satan in the appearance of Professor Woland who claims that Jesus has lived just as certainly as Berlioz is about to lose his head that day. As the prophecy is fulfilled, Bezdomny sets off to search for Woland and his assistants but they all disappear. Bezdomny is put into an asylum where the Master has found
refuge in front of persecutions because of the novel he has written on Pilates meeting Christ. In the real world he has abandoned his beloved Margarita. Eager to meet the Master again, Margarita accepts Satan’s invitation to be the hostess of his witches’ ball. As Margarita proves to be an outstanding witches’ hostess, Woland makes her wish come true, and as "manuscripts don’t burn”, he returns to the Master his lost novel and enables the lovers to live a new life. The Master and Margarita is
a performance that reminds us that the only possible way out of political repression is the endlessness of artistic fantasy.
