In collaboration with Teatro Sociale in Rovigo and Stagione lirica Padova
One of the greatest geniuses of the Italian opera, Giuseppe Verdi, repeatedly said about his third opera Nabucco that it was his key work that had finally established him in the world as a successful opera composer, especially after the opera’s majestic triumph at the Scala in Milan. Verdi took Solera’s libretto, based on the Old testament parable of the Hebrew liberation from slavery under Babylonian tyranny, and reworked it into a grand music "portrait” of the destiny
of a certain nation. Verdi’s opera masterpieces instantly found its place in the front lines of the Italian risorgimento – a political movement for Italian liberation under hegemonic grasp of the Habsburg double-headed "eagle”. In contrast to the virtuoso and heroic soloist parts, one could argue that the most prominent role in this opera is played by the choir, and amid this great dramatic entanglement of the individual and collective, Verdi developed his unique music style. We invite you to
enjoy this early Verdi’s spectacle, staged by an accomplished director Filippo Tonon.
