Goethe’s tragic play Faust has had a long-lasting "reputation” of being utterly unsuitable for stage, mostly because of its complexity, universal topics and even on account of some featured supernatural scenes. Yet, the legacy of Goethe’s Faust remains unparalleled in the European and world literature and might be, in a certain way, even more present(able) to this day. When the late Renaissance scholar and alchemist Faust realizes in his old age that all the gathered knowledge did not bring him happiness, he wishes to end his life, especially since he never experienced love. The story of one’s wasted life and, in turn, about Faust striking a deal with the Devil himself, found its way into the world of opera. The French romantic composer Charles Gounod, who was an avid admirer of the Medieval church mysticism, reached artistic peak in his own right with his grand opera Faust. Gounod’s dramatic depiction of the crucial events in Faust’s life, directed by Pier Francesco Maestrini and under the baton of Gianluca Martinenghi, will once again come to life on Maribor opera stage in its full potential as a genuine spectacle.
