Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Don Giovanni

Premiere: 8 March 2013

Comic opera (opera buffa) in two acts

DON GIOVANNI is a production of The Savonlinna Opera Festival

Opera is sung in Italian with Slovenian subtitles.

After a huge success of the opera Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) in 1786, the Prague impresario, Guardasoni, commissioned a new work, which would be based on a popular adventures of the Spanish nobleman, Don Juan Tenorio, who had a legendary reputation as a adulterer and seducer of women. Prior to success Prague, the opera house in Venice staged the opera Don Giovannio Tenorio, o sia Il convitato di pietra by Italian composer Giuseppe Gazzanga (after libretto by Giovanni Bertati). The librettist of Mozart’s opera Le nozze di Figaro, Lorenzo da Ponte, improved and extended the text, which was inspired by Molière’s moral comedy Don Juan ou le festin de pierre (Don Juan, or The Feast with the Statue). Mozart’s comic opera Don Giovanni eventually became one of the most complex and significant stage works, which reflected the spirit of the Enlightenment, addressing the serious moral and ethical problems, such as the institution of (modern) marriage, social differences (social class, colliding economic backgrounds, etc.), justification of adultery and hedonism, sexual freedom, even the emancipation of women – to name just a few. Mozart’s musical genius confronts the realism of musical drama with supernatural phenomena (e.g. the appearance of a stone guest, the late father of Donna Anna, who seeks revenge of his killer), which were often used within genre of opera seria. Therefore, the opera establishes a significant symbolic relation to ongoing problems of modern society, combining virtuoso vocal coloratura (primarily imbued in the roles of Donna Anna and Donna Elvira), dramatic development and self-conflict (Leporello) with classical symphonic brilliance and Don Giovanni’s psychological downfall, while exposing his utter egocentrism and nihilism of a demonic "Casanova”. Thus, his tragic story remains a valuable life lesson for all viewers and listeners, which can be sought (and found) only in the greatest works of art.
