Rodion Shchedrin

Paquita - Carmen

Premiere: 28 March 2014, Grand Hall

Carmen, a ballet for a string orchestra and percussion was created in 1967, and is one of the most original and also the most successful works by the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin. As a graduate of the Music Conservatory in Moscow, Shchedrin was one of the most important musical figures of the former Soviet Union. The composer soon enjoyed the international reputation, mainly on account of his ballets – most of them he wrote for his wife, Maya Plisetskaya, one of the most prominent Russian prima ballerinas of the 20th century. Shchedrin’s sensual orchestration, witty sense for rhythmic details, and juxtaposition of different psychological moods has shocked the purist admirers of Bizet’s Carmen. Nevertheless, one of the greatest advocates of the ballet novelty was a brilliant Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, who saw Shcherin’s Carmen as a shining example of the art of congenial translation of Bizet’s opera into pure festivity of the dance.

After a highly successful premiere of Prokofiev’s neoclassical ballet Romeo and Juliet (in the season 2012/2013), the new choreographic creation by Valentina Turcu for Maribor focuses on the sensual dance magnetism arising from the erotically charged and libidinal power of the decadent protagonist Carmen. Ballet’s libretto remains focused on the basic premise of the plot – the erotic power of women, freedom of sexual experimenting, and its integration into the love triangle among Carmen, Don José and Escamillo. The overall image and unique aura of the dance spectacle is visually enhanced by costume imagery in the creation of the internationally acclaimed Israeli artist Michal Negrin, who has been an unparalleled inspiration to viewers and connoisseurs of fashion and clothing culture all around the world, mainly because of her unique style, incorporating fantasy, neoclassical arabesque and sensuality.
