A young Slovene dancer and choreographer Gaj Žmavc began his ballet training at the Conservatory for Music and Ballet in Maribor and continued his studies at the International Academy for Classical Dance in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. In 2006 he became a member of the Maribor ballet ensemble, where he began his intense collaboration with artistic director and choreographer Edward Clug. As a member and featured soloist he toured with the Maribor ballet ensemble in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, South Korea, Columbia, Hungary, Portugal, Sweden, Serbia, Singapore, Russian federation, Ukraine, Canada, USA, etc. He also performed at the most acclaimed and prestigious dance festival venues, such as Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Stars of the White Nights at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Swedish Royal Opera, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, etc. As choreographer and conceptual artist he created several choreographic miniatures; in turn, he was twice a finalist of the Choreographic Miniatures’ Festival in Belgrade. In 2013 he made his successful debut with the title Home for a new Maribor ballet premiere, Evening of contemporary choreographies. Among other projects, he collaborated as an assistant for stage movement in Nataša Matjašec Rošker’s original project Hic Sunt Leones (Lions be here) and for the staging of The Old-fashioned Comedy, directed by Ajda Valcl. In 2015 he created a new choreography for the Young Slovene Ballet upon invitation by the president of the Slovene Ballet Artists’ Association, Mr. Tomaž Rode, titled as Four Last Songs – after Richard Strauss’s compositions of the same name. In 2017 he also created a new choreography for a new Maribor production of Richard Wagner’s music drama Das Rheingold (directed by Igor Pison). Later on in the same year, he won the 1st prize at the 3rd Young Slovene Choreographers’ Competition, namely for his new piece Yesterdays.
