Valentin Pivovarov
Valentin Pivovarov was born in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, where he studied singing and soon became a soloist at the Taras Shevchenko Theatre. After completing his studies, he participated in numerous international competitions, and was awarded the Mikhail Glinka prize. At the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow he won the second place, and in the competition Voci Verdiane in Busseto he was awarded the gold medal. The singer’s repertoire comprises major bass roles in the operas of Verdi: Don Carlos (Philip II., Grand Inquisitor), Aida (Pharaoh, Ramfis), The Lombards on the First Crusade (Pagano), Nabucco (Zechariah), Rigoletto (Count Monterone), as well as lots of operas Rossini, Puccini, Donizetti, and Mozart. He has appeared as Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville, Colline in La bohème, Simone in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Raimondo in Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor and Commendatore in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. Among his vast Russian repertoire, he sang the role of Boris and Pimen in Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky, the role of Prince Ivan Khovansky in Khovanshchina, Konchak in Borodin’s opera Prince Igor and Prince Gremin in Tchaikovsky’s lyrical opera Eugene Onegin. Pivovarov performed the role of Prince Gremin with great success at the most prominent Venetian opera venue, La Fenice. As a soloist, he performed also the bass part in Verdi's Requiem, for which he was awarded with a big applause at the Paris Salle Pleyel. He also performed liturgical works by Rossini, such as his hymns Stabat Mater and Petite messe solennelle, as well as Mozart’s Requiem. His latest engagements in Slovene National Opera Maribor comprise of roles such as Pharaoh and Ramfis (Aida), Jake Wallace (La fanciulla del West), Don Basilio (The Barber of Seville) and Timur in the upcoming premiere of Puccini’s Turandot.
