La Sylphide was the first staple Romantic ballet and it is one of the oldest ballets still regularly performed. Its story derives from the obsessive stories of the French writer Charles Nodier, Trilby, ou Le Lutin d’Argail published in 1822, and tells of a male elf who lures a fisherman’s wife away from her husband. Inspired by it and with the legendary ballerina Marie Taglioni in mind, Adolphe Nourrit decided to create a ballet reversing the genders in Nodier’s story and casting Taglioni as the seducing spirit. Bournonville’s reworking of La Sylphide is a rare case of a remake that is in many ways better than the original. The Danish ballet master was Taglioni’s contemporary and great admirer of the ballerina. After seeing La Sylphide in Paris in 1834, Bournonville acquired Nourrit’s scenario and commissioned a new score from Norwegian composer Herman Løvenskiold. An improved choreography of La Sylphide, premiered in Copenhagen in 1836, introduced a new trend of ballet narrative, imbued with poetic imagery and symbolism that still thrills the audiences across the world today.

About Karina Elver, choreographer
Karina Elver was born in 1962 in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. She began to dance cha-cha-cha and rumba at the age of 3. She got accepted at The Royal Danish Ballet School in 1978 and after training at the Royal Danish Ballet School, she entered the Royal Danish Ballet at the age of 18. There she danced many soloist parts in such as Clara in The Nutcracker, in productions of Bournonville, George Balanchine, Petipa, Alvin Ailey, etc. Beside the work as a ballet dancer, choreographer and suddenly a mother for two, she started to educate herself as an actress on the side. Since her retirement in 2003 from the Royal Danish Ballet, she has travelled extensively to teach, choreograph and stage the works of August Bournonville all over the world. Her choreographic work choreographer was featured at the Royal Danish Theatre, namely with the Royal Danish Opera production of Tännhauser and New Year’s Gala. She was also featured in several motion pictures as a choreographic consultant for the Queen Margareth II of Denmark (The Wild Swans), etc. She has directed her own ballet school and presented numerous children’s productions, including The Wrong Princess (Royal Danish Theatre), The Mother of the Sea (Greenland), and H. C. Andersen’s The Princess on The Pea (India). Karina Elver is very passionate about the Danish ballet tradition, specifically about August Bournonville’s choreographic legacy. Since 2011, Karina Elver has been working (mostly teaching and staging Bournonville's ballets) in New York for the last six years, and other states across the USA.

Choreographer’s note about the Maribor ballet production of La sylphide
"Now I am here in Maribor, and I enjoy working very much with all the dancers and the team around me. What makes this performance always so interesting to work with is that there is a lot of different interpretations of this ballet. I like to see it this way: one can say that Bournonville's La sylphide is the most ‘timeless’ ballet because it is about some eternal themes: the longing for something different, unknown, greater than what you already have, and to know your own responsibilities, or to run from them, without seeing the consequences at all. You can also interpret the witch figure like the ‘Consequence’, or the dark, destructive side of James, perhaps even as his reality, while the Sylph is an illusion of his beliefs of passion and love, and when his illusion finally believes he has her, then it is pulverized between his fingers. I wish you a wonderful evening.”
