First staged at the Teatro Regio Torino on February 1st 1896, La bohème is the fourth opera by Puccini with a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. Still one of the most beloved operas today, the love story revolves about a young, but penniless couple, a seamstress Mimì and a poet Rodolfo, who are trying to make their way through the perils of poverty. The couple, accompanied by Musetta and Marcello, and friends Schaunard and Colline, is facing many obstacles to true happiness. La bohème is a story about growing up and facing pain in the ever-changing Parisian environment during its first period of industrialization. The merry band of friends comes to terms with the harsh reality of Mimì's condition. Suffering from tuberculosis, she dies in the arms of her Rodolfo and forever changes the fate of all the characters. The opera has a score worked in minute detail that sets in motion a perfect theatrical mechanism, insightful, yet very delicate. La bohème is undoubtedly an operatic masterpiece that is still very fresh and modern even today, along with its compelling theatrics and emotional impact.
